Yannick and Colin, both 16 years old, Amsterdam. Mind the T-shirts they are wearing: together the shirts form their new invented word ‘individuo’. They printed it to celebrate that they are best friends. Yannick likes to play songs from Slipknot on his guitar, Colin wants to become a designer.(photographer: Jasper Groen)

Jasper Groen (1974, Nieuwkoop, portrait left by Vincent Doek) documents youngsters and their subcultures in the Netherlands and abroad. He is self taught, but he had an internship of six months at Studio Erwin Olaf (2005) and a masterclass from Rineke Dijkstra (2006). His series are mostly published by Vrij Nederland.

July 2006 Foam, Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam exhibited his series on Jeffrey, who changed in three years time from a breakdancer into a neo-nazi. For this occasion Groen released a book with 22 photos of Jeffrey. Later he extended this serie with new work, shown at the Melkweg Gallery. A 4 minutes slideshow of the photographs, including interviews, was exhibited in 2011 at Nederlands Fotomuseum.

May 2007 Groen exhibited at Fotofestival Naarden.

In 2008 his book of Jeffrey was part of an exhibition about books of young Dutch photographers at Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. In september the Melkweg Gallery, Amsterdam, hosted the solo exhibition Young Identities, with the series Jeffrey, Lips and Findig Emo.

In 2009 Groen worked as an ‘artist-in-residence’ in Venlo. His serie about youngsters of this city, called Carpe Diem, has been exhibited in the open air in Venlo in 2010 and 2011. His portrait ‘Volker on Dam Square’ was on display in the exhibition Outside at the gaymonument in Amsterdam, in July. His exhibition Young Identities traveled to Moscow, Russia.

In 2010 Groen started an ongoing internet project: http://www.aportraitforbreakfast.com. During at least one year he makes a daily one portrait of a young and creative person he meets in the streets of Amsterdam. A selection of the first months of this project was on display in an exhibition in St. Petersburg, Russia.

2011 museum Huis Marseille in Amsterdam hosted a groupsexhibition with a photograph of Groen from his series Gothic Lolita’s. His project A Portrait For Breakfast is still continuing.
